Lin Shan, or Spiritual Mountain, is a school of Yang Style Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) based in Cape Town, South Africa, with two branches in Kenilworth and Plumstead. In addition to Taijiquan, Lin Shan Kenilworth also offers studies in Raja Yoga.
Taijiquan is an ancient Chinese internal martial art, said to have been developed by the Daoist sage Chang San-feng in the 13th century. Today, this gentle though invigorating and challenging discipline is practiced by millions of people worldwide, young and old.
Lin Shan teaches Taijiquan along traditional lines, primarily to cultivate health and well-being. Interested students are shown that Taijiquan is also a method of spiritual unfoldment, through movement, concentration, observation, and meditation.
The teachers at Lin Shan are all long-time students of the art, and are under continuous instruction from Grandmaster Lin Feng-chao.
Raja Yoga can be described as the science of spiritual union through right use of the mind. This form of Yoga is a contemplative practice by which a person may arrive at full knowledge of their higher nature. Its primary goal is to produce an individual that is illumined, loving, self-directing, and creative in a spiritual sense. Raja Yoga is not widely known about in the West, where physical forms of yoga (hatha) have been popularised.
The fundamental teachings of Raja Yoga were first written down by the yogi Patanjali, in the form of sutras. These writings are unsurpassed to this day, and can be said to reveal the very basis of the spiritual Path.
