Tai Chi Chuan (Taijiquan) is an ancient Chinese internal art and mind-body discipline. It is a method for the cultivation of physical and psychological well-being and vitality.
The correct practice of Taijiquan, sustained over time, yields many treasures for the student. Amongst the physical benefits are: co-ordination, agility, suppleness, core and general body strength, balance, resilience and physical confidence. Some basic psychological benefits are to do with emotional calm and stress reduction and well as mental focus and concentration.
Beyond health-related considerations, Taijiquan has a profound spiritual and philosophical basis. Deeper practice leads naturally to a consideration of the art’s inner and true meaning; its wider application in daily living, and the evolution of one’s own practice from a predominantly physical discipline into a moving meditation.
Although Taijiquan is an art grounded in physical structure and movement, it is an internal art. This means that it is not only a physical exercise, but is based on internal principles and qualities, such as relaxation, rootedness, centredness, and what is called 'suspending.' It is these principles, and their deeper significances, that are the very essence and substance of Taijiquan. Ultimately, the art is a method for spiritual self-transformation.
